According to the Official YouTube Blog, YouTube is going to release a completely paid-tier for their online video-streaming service, dubbed “YouTube Red”, no doubt a play on their signature color they’ve had since their inception in 2005.
On October 28, we’re giving fans exactly what they want. Introducing YouTube Red — a new membership designed to provide you with the ultimate YouTube experience.
YouTube Red lets you enjoy videos across all of YouTube without ads, while also letting you save videos to watch offline on your phone or tablet and play videos in the background, all for $9.99 a month.
A number of interesting things:
- Original Content: Content Partners such as PewDiePie team up with others to produce exclusive shows and movies. (Source)
- The tier starts at $9.99, but subscribing via iOS costs $12.99 – most likely due to the mandatory 30% cut Apple takes with in-app purchases and subscriptions.
- The YouTube staff are banking on people’s growing disdain for video ads (or maybe ads in general) to drive subscriptions (and to be honest, some of the ads are getting pretty ridiculous).
